# ASTR 101 Course Materials Review Report

Status: Approved for review release; not yet approved for instructional use.

## Trigger for Second Pass

The first generated slide decks were structurally complete but substantively shallow. They followed the template trajectory too closely, lacked sufficient material depth for a typical 60-minute lecture, and should have been flagged by review. This second pass corrects that failure mode.

## Corrections Applied

- Regenerated all 14 lecture slide decks with 14 slides each: title, goals, phenomenon, vocabulary, evidence, model, quantitative tool, worked example, visual reasoning, misconception, active learning, lab connection, synthesis, and references.
- Regenerated all 14 lecture notes with expanded explanations, evidence tables, model development, quantitative reasoning, worked examples, visual interpretation, misconceptions, active-learning guidance, lab connections, synthesis questions, and references.
- Grounded every lecture in OpenStax Astronomy 2e chapter ranges or topic anchors.
- Added a local textbook reference copy at `references/openstax-astronomy-2e.pdf`.
- Added reference-log entries for the local textbook copy and candidate verified visual-source families.
- Avoided unverified external images in the regenerated decks; lecture-specific original SVG figures are used until specific Creative Commons, NASA, ESA/Hubble, or observatory visuals are selected and logged.
- Replaced the repeated generic visual-reasoning figure with distinct, larger, lecture-specific figures sized for classroom inspection.
- Removed meta captions and production-facing slide language identified by review.
- Replaced repeated generic learning goals, visual prompts, lab framing, and synthesis questions with lecture-specific student-facing content.

## Remaining Review Items

- Human reviewer should inspect whether each lecture has the desired level of detail for the local teaching style.
- Exact OpenStax section and figure mappings should be added when substituting textbook figures or assigning readings.
- External images should be selected lecture-by-lecture, verified in `reference-log.md`, and substituted only where they improve learning.
- The reviewer should continue to demand visual quality comparable to a rigorous MIT or Stanford astronomy course: large, legible, specific, and conceptually central.
- Problem sets and labs may need enrichment after the revised slides and notes are accepted.

## Current Status

Approved for review release. Not yet approved for instructional use.

## Outstanding Items Before Instructional Use

These items do not block review-release status, but they should be resolved or consciously accepted before classroom deployment.

- **Human instructional approval:** An instructor or course owner must make the final instructional-use decision. Agent review can validate structure, consistency, links, references, and obvious quality issues, but it cannot replace local teaching judgment.
- **Classroom fit and pacing:** Review whether each lecture has the right depth and pace for the local semester schedule, student preparation, and meeting length.
- **Visual projection check:** Open representative slide decks on the intended classroom display or projector. Confirm that inserted images, SVGs, labels, equations, and captions are legible from the back of the room.
- **Remaining visual enrichment:** The package now uses localized, logged visuals where approved, but several lectures still rely partly on original schematics. Instructors may choose to add more mission images, real data plots, or annotated observational figures where they improve learning.
- **OpenStax spot-check:** The extracted source index supports exact problem recommendations, but a human should spot-check recommended problem numbers, section references, and figure numbers against the adopted OpenStax Astronomy 2e PDF/edition before assigning them.
- **Lab local feasibility:** Confirm the local observing site, safety practices, weather alternatives, telescope/binocular availability, software access, target lists, and instructor-provided datasets/images.
- **Lab datasets and handouts:** Several labs specify instructor-provided images, spectra, target lists, or CSV files. These should be finalized, stored under `data/` when appropriate, and logged in `reference-log.md` with provenance.
- **Accessibility review:** Check alt text, color contrast, keyboard/browser usability, visual-heavy activities, observing accommodations, and alternatives for students unable to attend night observing sessions.
- **Assessment calibration:** Review grading weights, resubmission policy, collaboration policy, solution-key release practices, and rubric detail against local departmental standards.
- **Policy alignment:** Update syllabus language for the local institution's academic integrity, accessibility, safety, late-work, weather, and field/observing policies.

## Lab Second-Pass Correction

The CourseMaterialsReviewAgent identified the lab package as the remaining review-release blocker. The first lab pass reused generic procedures across all labs and did not provide concrete measurements, datasets, calculations, uncertainty treatment, or provenance.

Corrections applied:

- Rewrote all eight labs as concrete activities aligned to the schedule.
- Added lab-specific preparation, materials/data, step-by-step procedures, analysis/uncertainty tasks, deliverables, assessment criteria, and references/provenance notes.
- Added explicit source/provenance expectations for datasets, images, software, and observing resources.

Lab status: approved for review release.
