# ASTR 410 Course Materials Review Report

**Status: Approved for review release. Not yet approved for instructional use.**

## Review scope

Reviewed the complete ASTR410 package: syllabus, schedule, reference log, manifest, README files, data README and three CSV teaching extracts, 14 lecture slide decks, 14 lecture notes files, 7 labs, 7 problem sets, 7 solution keys, 7 assessment-instruction files, and final index. Reviewed against the ASTR360 and ASTR370 reports and the current course-material skills.

## Completeness and dependency order

- The package contains 14 lecture slide/note pairs, 7 labs, 7 problem sets, 7 solution keys, and 7 assessment-instruction files.
- Syllabus and schedule define the sequence before downstream artifacts. The seven labs and problem sets follow seven explicitly documented two-lecture units.
- The manifest counts match the files on disk: 14/14/7/7/7/7.
- `index.html` links the planning documents, all lecture title-bearing slide/note pairs, all labs, all problem-set artifacts, data, source, manifest, and this review report.

## Depth, rigor, and alignment

The lecture arc moves from Galactic geometry and observables through populations, phase space, rotation, spiral structure, chemical evolution, dark matter, the Galactic center, nearby galaxies, scaling relations, survey inference, Galactic archaeology, and synthesis. Each deck contains objectives, motivation, a governing relation, a computed example, evidence/model interpretation, a limitation, an active reasoning prompt, takeaways, references, and a large visual. Notes expand the same arc with assumptions, derivation context, misconceptions, and study guidance.

Labs require a concrete CSV, setup, raw-data inspection, transformation or fit, sensitivity test, reproducible code, labeled figure, uncertainty/model critique, deliverables, and grading criteria. Problem sets contain four lecture-specific derivation, data, critique, and transfer questions; solution keys and assessment instructions are separate and aligned.

## Visual-reasoning check

Each lecture slide deck has one large SVG visual with an accessible, lecture-specific `aria-label`. The 14 labels are distinct: density profile, coordinate geometry, population histogram, velocity vector, rotation curve, spiral pattern, chemical cycle, halo geometry, infrared Galactic center, Local Group map, Tully-Fisher relation, Bayesian inference, galaxy decomposition, and Galactic-archaeology timeline. No repeated generic three-box visual was found, and no fallback diagram remains.

## Textbook and provenance integrity

OpenStax Astronomy 2e Chapter 25 was checked in the local extracted text: sections 25.1–25.4 and the later 25.5–25.6 summary are present, with embedded Figures 25.1–25.25 appearing in the relevant chapter sequence. The local problem index's chapter labels are offset in places, so the exact Chapter 25 exercise block was checked directly in the extracted text. Problem sets use exact Chapter 25 exercise identifiers (including 25.18, 25.19, 25.21, 25.24, and 25.25) and disclose the adopted-PDF spot-check requirement.

Provenance is tri-level and honest: no external values are claimed as level 1 in this production run; literature and survey-summary values are level 2 and flagged for human spot-check; generated SVGs and representative model values are level 3. The compact CSVs are teaching extracts, not newly observed measurements.

## Independent recomputation

An independent calculation, retyping the formulas rather than importing the generator, returned:

- Milky Way enclosed mass at 8.2 kpc and 232 km/s: `1.02616122571e11 solar masses`.
- Local orbital period: `0.217146240095 Gyr`.
- Three scale heights: `exp(-3) = 0.0497870683679`.
- `[Fe/H] = -1.55`: `10^-1.55 = 0.0281838293126` times the solar iron-to-hydrogen ratio.
- Proper-motion conversion for 2.5 mas/yr at 1.6 kpc: `18.96188 km/s`.
- Virial-estimator exercise at 120 kpc and 95 km/s: `1.25899567815e12 solar masses`.

The checks found no unit-direction or approximation-honesty errors in these examples after correction.

## Final assembly and navigation

The displayed Lecture 01 title in `index.html` was directly compared with the title in the linked `lecture-01-slides.html`; the displayed title segment matches exactly. The displayed Lab 01 title was directly compared with the linked `labs/lab-01.html` heading; it matches the source title. All local HTML links resolve after this report was created. `astronomy_curriculum.html` now has the ASTR410 Course materials badge in its existing calendar card. ASTR410 was already present in the Four-Year Course List, so no new table row was added. Root `index.html` was not changed.

## Residual risks before instructional use

- Human spot-check all level-2 CSV rows against the cited Gaia, Milky Way, and review-literature sources.
- Confirm OpenStax exercise wording and numbering against the adopted PDF.
- Complete accessibility/contrast review and finalize local academic-integrity, accommodations, calendar, and instructor-policy language.

**Review verdict: Approved for review release.**
