# ASTR 470 Course Materials Review Report

**Status: Approved for review release. Not yet approved for instructional use.**

## Review scope

Reviewed the assembled ASTR470 package: syllabus, schedule, reference log, manifest, README files, data and source READMEs, 14 lecture slide decks, 14 lecture notes files, 7 labs, 7 problem sets, 7 solution keys, 7 assessment-instruction files, final index, and repository navigation links.

## Completeness and dependency order

- The package contains 14 lecture slide/note pairs, 7 labs, 7 problem sets, 7 solution keys, and 7 assessment files.
- Syllabus and schedule establish the sequence before downstream artifacts. Labs and problem sets follow seven explicitly documented two-lecture units.
- The manifest counts match the concrete files on disk: 14/14/7/7/7/7.
- `index.html` links planning documents, every title-bearing lecture pair, every lab, every problem-set artifact, source, data, manifest, and this report.

## Depth, rigor, and alignment

The lecture arc moves from high-energy radiation and accretion through white dwarfs, supernova remnants, pulsars, neutron-star structure, black-hole dynamics, relativistic jets, cosmic-ray acceleration, X-ray and gamma-ray instrumentation, transients, and multimessenger research design. Each deck contains objectives, motivating evidence, a physical model, a quantitative relation, a worked audit, a failure-mode discussion, an active reasoning prompt, a lab/problem-set bridge, synthesis, and exact source anchors. The expanded decks contain 13 slides each, including an observational-signature table, scale analysis, and boundary-condition check. Notes expand the decks with evidence-chain classification, assumptions, sensitivity guidance, misconceptions, study guidance, and source-specific reading.

Labs are non-interchangeable: spectral response, compact-object accretion, SNR shocks, pulsar timing, neutron-star mass-radius inference, transient instrument selection, and a multimessenger dossier. Each specifies a named dataset, setup, procedure, measurement/analysis record, uncertainty or sensitivity treatment, deliverables, assessment expectations, and provenance. Problem sets contain four lecture-unit-specific questions with quantitative derivation, data interpretation, skeptical-review critique, and transfer design, plus separate solution and assessment artifacts.

## Visual-reasoning check

A mechanical comparison of the first SVG body in each of the 14 slide files found zero exact duplicates. The figures use distinct structures including curves, ellipses, compactness plots, shock diagrams, pulsar geometry, response bars, trigger profiles, and a multimessenger evidence polygon. No generic repeated three-box schematic is used.

## Quantitative correctness and independent recomputation

Independent recomputation returned:

- 5 keV thermal scale: `5 keV/k = 5.8023e7 K`.
- Crab-like timing check with `P=0.033 s`, `Pdot=4.2e-13`: characteristic age `1.2449e3 yr`; a 10 km star's equatorial speed is `1.904e6 m/s`, well below `c`.
- A `1.4 Msun`, `12 km` neutron star: compactness `2GM/(Rc^2) = 0.172278`; gravitational redshift `z = 0.235186`.
- A `21 Msun` black hole: Schwarzschild radius `62.0201 km`.
- A one-day flare with Doppler factor 10 at `z=0.5`: source-size bound `1154.30 AU`.
- A `5000 km/s` strong shock with `mu=0.61`: post-shock scale `kT = 29.8510 keV`.
- A `1 PeV` proton in a `3 microgauss` field: relativistic Larmor radius `0.360087 pc`.
- A burst with `S=40 counts/s`, `B=160 counts/s`, `t=25 s`: Poisson `S/N = 14.14`.
- The final weighted project score for ratings `4/3/5/2` and weights `0.35/0.25/0.20/0.20` is `0.7100`, or `3.55/5` when expressed on a five-point scale.

Unit conversions, comparative directions, and approximation limits are stated in the generated artifacts. The calculations are generated from shared constants in `src/generate_astr470_package.py`, not hand-entered independently in each artifact.

## Source and provenance integrity

The reference log uses exact OpenStax section anchors and indexed Chapter 23 exercise wording, with adopted-edition spot-checks explicitly required. Chandra, Swift, Fermi, NICER, and IceCube mission facts fetched from official pages on 2026-09-25 are level 1. Crab timing values, Cygnus X-1 parameters, canonical SNR values, AGN values, and standard compact-object parameters are labeled level 2 and flagged for human spot-check. Compact CSVs, worked-example records, weighted scores, and original SVGs are labeled level 3 instructor-provided teaching artifacts. No level-3 record is presented as an observation or live archive result.

## Final assembly and navigation

All 14 lecture titles displayed in `index.html` were compared with the linked slide `<h1>` titles and matched. The ASTR470 row in the four-year schedule links to `materials/ASTR470/index.html`. The ASTR470 calendar card has one `Course materials` badge alongside its `Elective` tag. Root `index.html` was not changed. The package contains no prior-course title, status, or generator-string carryover.

## Residual risks before instructional use

- Human spot-check exact OpenStax section/exercise wording against the adopted edition.
- Replace or explicitly preserve level-3 teaching records when assigning live archive work; verify current mission operations and data-release policies at the time of instruction.
- Spot-check level-2 object parameters against SIMBAD, mission archives, and the relevant literature before presenting them as current measurements.
- Finalize institution-specific accessibility, academic-integrity, accommodations, attendance, late-work, safety, and instructor-policy language.

## Review verdict

**Approved for review release.** The package meets the established benchmark for substantive lectures, unique visual reasoning, computed quantitative examples, concrete labs, concrete problem sets, exact source grounding, provenance disclosure, and final assembly. It is not yet approved for instructional use pending the human checks above.
