Lecture 09: Spectral-Line Observing and Doppler Inference

Radio Astronomy

A spectral cube combines two-dimensional angular response with a frequency axis whose calibration becomes velocity only after a rest frequency and convention are chosen.

Objectives and route

  1. Convert channel frequency to nonrelativistic radial velocity with units.
  2. Distinguish frequency resolution from velocity resolution.
  3. Plan line sensitivity without hiding the channel-width trade-off.

Route: identify what the receiver measures, derive the physical/instrument relation, calculate a scale, then test its assumptions against a diagnostic.

Rest frequency

Definition: The transition frequency in the emitter's rest frame used as the Doppler reference.

Why it matters here: It is needed to answer At fixed channel width in Hz, why does velocity resolution change with observing frequency? Which band gives finer km/s channels? and to interpret A narrow line can be diluted by channels wider than its intrinsic width.

Relationships: Use it with Bandpass ripple and Radio velocity convention; the lecture model is \(v_{\rm rad}\simeq c\frac{\nu_0-\nu}{\nu_0},\qquad\delta v\simeq c\frac{\delta\nu}{\nu_0}\).

Boundary or common confusion: The linear radio Doppler convention is appropriate for Galactic velocities but not precision high-redshift work; frame and relativistic conventions must be recorded.

Observation before interpretation

A spectral cube combines two-dimensional angular response with a frequency axis whose calibration becomes velocity only after a rest frequency and convention are chosen.

Keep four layers distinct in your notebook: raw correlation or spectrum, calibrated product, model parameter, and physical claim.

Physical model

For |v| much less than c, the first-order Doppler relation is Delta-nu/nu_0 approximately -v_rad/c. Therefore delta-v=c delta-nu/nu_0. At larger speeds use the chosen relativistic Doppler definition and document the frame correction (topocentric, barycentric, LSR).

\(v_{\rm rad}\simeq c\frac{\nu_0-\nu}{\nu_0},\qquad\delta v\simeq c\frac{\delta\nu}{\nu_0}\)

Define each quantity and convention before substitution. A relation is useful only inside its stated regime.

Worked calculation

Inputs: nu0=1420.40575177 MHz, nu0-nu=0.500 MHz; channel=10 kHz.

v_radio = 105.5 km/s; 10-kHz channel = 2.111 km/s

The linear radio Doppler convention is appropriate for Galactic velocities but not precision high-redshift work; frame and relativistic conventions must be recorded.

Independent audit: carry SI units through the derivation, then check the limiting direction and scale.

Read the geometry or data relation

line centerfrequency → radio velocitychannel width
A narrow line can be diluted by channels wider than its intrinsic width.

Identify what is directly encoded in the figure and which inference requires an instrument model or physical assumption.

Where the inference can fail

The linear radio Doppler convention is appropriate for Galactic velocities but not precision high-redshift work; frame and relativistic conventions must be recorded.

Reasoning prompt

At fixed channel width in Hz, why does velocity resolution change with observing frequency? Which band gives finer km/s channels?

Write the predicted scaling first; then identify which measurement would falsify it.

Connection to the observing workflow

This lecture feeds into the paired lab: Spectral Cubes, Doppler Velocity, and Line Width. Preserve the raw-to-calibrated-to-inferred chain and carry the same units and assumptions into the analysis.

For a real observation, archive the project identifier, correlator setup, antenna configuration, calibration version, flags, beam, and data-release citation.

Synthesis

Spectral-Line Observing and Doppler Inference is one stage in a measurement chain: celestial signal → antenna and receiver → sampled data → calibration → image/spectrum → uncertainty-aware inference.
