Lecture 14: Radio Surveys: Catalogs, Confusion, and Reproducible Analysis

Radio Astronomy

A survey result is a chain from calibrated visibilities or spectra to source catalog, completeness model, and population claim.

Objectives and route

  1. Calculate completeness-corrected surface density and Poisson counting uncertainty.
  2. Compare thermal noise, confusion, and calibration floors.
  3. Design a reproducible survey-analysis record with provenance and selection cuts.

Route: identify what the receiver measures, derive the physical/instrument relation, calculate a scale, then test its assumptions against a diagnostic.

Source catalog

Definition: A structured set of detected components with measured properties, flags, and provenance.

Why it matters here: It is needed to answer A deeper survey detects a higher source density. List two physical interpretations and two selection/systematic explanations before claiming population evolution. and to interpret NVSS and other radio surveys enable population studies but differ in resolution, frequency, coverage, and source-finding thresholds.

Relationships: Use it with Reproducible workflow and Completeness correction; the lecture model is \(\Sigma=\frac{N_{\rm det}}{A C},\qquad\sigma_\Sigma\simeq\frac{\sqrt{N_{\rm det}}}{A C}\).

Boundary or common confusion: The Poisson uncertainty ignores cosmic variance, clustering, completeness uncertainty, and Eddington bias near the threshold; state which terms dominate the intended inference.

Observation before interpretation

A survey result is a chain from calibrated visibilities or spectra to source catalog, completeness model, and population claim.

Keep four layers distinct in your notebook: raw correlation or spectrum, calibrated product, model parameter, and physical claim.

Physical model

For N_det detections over usable area A with completeness C, the corrected surface density is Sigma=N_det/(A C). Under a simple Poisson model, sigma_Sigma=sqrt(N_det)/(A C), before uncertainty in C, A, flux scale, and source association. If completeness is uncertain, propagate its covariance rather than treating C as exact.

\(\Sigma=\frac{N_{\rm det}}{A C},\qquad\sigma_\Sigma\simeq\frac{\sqrt{N_{\rm det}}}{A C}\)

Define each quantity and convention before substitution. A relation is useful only inside its stated regime.

Worked calculation

Inputs: N_det=1200, usable area=20 deg^2, completeness=0.84.

corrected surface density = 71.43 deg^-2; Poisson-only uncertainty = 2.062 deg^-2

The Poisson uncertainty ignores cosmic variance, clustering, completeness uncertainty, and Eddington bias near the threshold; state which terms dominate the intended inference.

Independent audit: carry SI units through the derivation, then check the limiting direction and scale.

NVSS and other radio surveys enable population studies but differ in resolution, frequency, coverage, and source-finding thresholds.

Identify what is directly encoded in the figure and which inference requires an instrument model or physical assumption.

Where the inference can fail

The Poisson uncertainty ignores cosmic variance, clustering, completeness uncertainty, and Eddington bias near the threshold; state which terms dominate the intended inference.

Reasoning prompt

A deeper survey detects a higher source density. List two physical interpretations and two selection/systematic explanations before claiming population evolution.

Write the predicted scaling first; then identify which measurement would falsify it.

Connection to the observing workflow

This lecture feeds into the paired lab: Survey Completeness and Galactic H I Mapping. Preserve the raw-to-calibrated-to-inferred chain and carry the same units and assumptions into the analysis.

For a real observation, archive the project identifier, correlator setup, antenna configuration, calibration version, flags, beam, and data-release citation.

Synthesis

Radio Surveys: Catalogs, Confusion, and Reproducible Analysis is one stage in a measurement chain: celestial signal → antenna and receiver → sampled data → calibration → image/spectrum → uncertainty-aware inference.

Next: connect this result to the course synthesis and survey-analysis workflow.
