Lecture 02: The FLRW Distance Ladder

ASTR 476: Observational Cosmology · 2026-09-27

Driving question: Why do cosmologists use several different distances?

Learning objectives

  1. Derive the radial comoving-distance integral from the FLRW line element.
  2. Use distance duality D_L=(1+z)^2 D_A under transparent metric propagation.
  3. Compute and label D_C, D_L, D_A, and D_V with units.

FLRW metric

Definition: The homogeneous and isotropic spacetime geometry used to relate expansion history to photon paths.

Why it matters here: It is required to answer Why do cosmologists use several different distances? and to distinguish direct observation from cosmological inference.

Relationships: Read it with Comoving distance, the model \(D_C(z)=c/H_0 integral_0^z dz'/E(z')\), and the evidence statement The computation is independently checked against Astropy FlatLambdaCDM with radiation disabled to match the explicitly matter-plus-Lambda integral.

Boundary or common confusion: Curvature changes transverse distance; radiation matters at early times. Never apply the flat, late-time integral to recombination as if it were a precision CMB model.

Slide 1 · 8 min

The metric sets the path

Write the radial null-geodesic interval and show where c/H(z) enters.

Slide 2 · 10 min

Expansion history E(z)

Derive E(z) for flat matter plus a cosmological constant; identify the low-redshift and early-time omissions.

Slide 3 · 12 min

One source, four distances

Follow the same light ray through D_C, D_L, and D_A; annotate the redshift factors rather than memorizing them.

Slide 4 · 12 min

A computed z=1 example

Compare the four distances and explain why a transverse ruler and a flux standard candle select different definitions.

Slide 5 · 10 min

Independent implementation

Compare quadrature with Astropy under matching assumptions; use the residual as a software check, not a physical measurement.

Slide 6 · 8 min

Dimensional audit

Check that c/H0 is a length and that every reported distance is in Mpc.

Quantitative anchor

At z=1, D_C=3401.263 Mpc, D_L=6802.526 Mpc, and D_A=1700.631 Mpc.

\[D_C(z)=c/H_0 integral_0^z dz'/E(z')\]

Interpretation and limits

The homogeneous-isotropic FLRW metric defines line-of-sight comoving, transverse comoving, angular-diameter, luminosity, and volume-averaged distances. They answer different measurement questions and are linked by reciprocity, not interchangeable by name.

Boundary: Curvature changes transverse distance; radiation matters at early times. Never apply the flat, late-time integral to recombination as if it were a precision CMB model.

Evidence: The computation is independently checked against Astropy FlatLambdaCDM with radiation disabled to match the explicitly matter-plus-Lambda integral.

Active check: Check that c/H0 is a length and that every reported distance is in Mpc.
