Lecture 03 Notes: Type Ia Supernovae as Standardizable Candles

ASTR 476: Observational Cosmology · 2026-09-27

Preparation: algebra, introductory mechanics, and the previous module's stated prerequisites. This is a 60-minute instructional module; use the slide timings as a guide and pause at the active check.

Terms Developed in Context

These terms organize the chain from recorded signal to calibrated observable, likelihood, and bounded cosmological claim.

Type Ia supernova

A thermonuclear stellar explosion used as a distance indicator after empirical standardization. In this module it is used to answer How does a light curve become a distance indicator?

Observable/model connection: The term links Pantheon+SH0ES provides 1701 light curves for 1550 supernovae; the teaching excerpt has 18 non-calibrator rows stratified in redshift and a matched covariance submatrix to Standardizable candle and the quantitative relation \(mu = m_B - M_B = 5 log_10(D_L/Mpc)+25\). State which part is measured, calibrated, derived, or model-dependent.

Limit: The excerpt is deliberately not representative and cannot reproduce a published cosmological constraint. Its diagonal errors are plotting-only. That boundary must remain attached when the term is used in a cosmological claim.

Standardizable candle

An object whose intrinsic luminosity scatter is reduced using measured correlations rather than assumed identical luminosity. In this module it is used to answer How does a light curve become a distance indicator?

Distance modulus

The logarithmic difference between apparent and absolute magnitude. In this module it is used to answer How does a light curve become a distance indicator?

Light-curve stretch

A duration or shape parameter correlated with standardized Type Ia luminosity. In this module it is used to answer How does a light curve become a distance indicator?

Absolute calibration

The external distance scale that fixes standardized absolute magnitude and the Hubble-diagram intercept. In this module it is used to answer How does a light curve become a distance indicator?

Physical and observational argument

A supernova light curve supplies peak flux, color, and temporal width, but standardization is empirical and population-dependent. After corrections, an apparent magnitude still combines absolute luminosity and distance. The distance modulus isolates the luminosity distance only after the calibrated absolute magnitude is specified. Because a uniform shift in absolute calibration can mimic a change in H0, relative distances over redshift constrain the shape of expansion while an external anchor is needed for an absolute scale. The course subset exercises that distinction and intentionally cannot replace the full survey sample.

A Type Ia supernova is standardized through empirical light-curve and color relations; it is not a perfectly identical explosion. The Hubble diagram constrains relative expansion history while absolute calibration is entangled with the standardized absolute magnitude.

Derivation and interpretation

\[mu = m_B - M_B = 5 log_10(D_L/Mpc)+25\]

Begin by naming observables, coordinate convention, and model assumptions; each algebraic transformation must preserve units and the distinction between measured and inferred quantities. Test a limiting case, then perturb one input and state which observable changes.

The excerpt is deliberately not representative and cannot reproduce a published cosmological constraint. Its diagonal errors are plotting-only.

Worked numerical anchor

At z=1, the computed distance modulus is 44.1634 mag; 0.01 mag corresponds to about 0.462% in distance.

Reproduce the value with the course computation module, retain full precision in code, and round only for communication. Report units and all conditional assumptions with the result.

Evidence, systematics, and limits

The excerpt is deliberately not representative and cannot reproduce a published cosmological constraint. Its diagonal errors are plotting-only.

Separate the directly recorded observable, its calibration, the derived intermediate quantity, and the model-dependent parameter. An uncertainty bar is not a complete likelihood when shared covariance or selection is omitted.

Study and retrieval practice

  1. Explain standardization with stretch, color, and host-galaxy information.
  2. Convert luminosity distance to distance modulus and propagate small magnitude offsets.
  3. Separate relative-distance shape from absolute calibration.

Checkpoint: State why a redshift-stratified 18-object subset is useful for methods practice but not a survey result.

Answer in words before calculating; then identify one observation or null test that could falsify your interpretation.
