Lecture 04: Supernova Covariance and Calibration

ASTR 476: Observational Cosmology · 2026-09-27

Driving question: Why is a list of error bars not a likelihood?

Learning objectives

  1. Construct residual vectors and interpret covariance off-diagonal terms.
  2. Evaluate correlated Gaussian chi-square using Cholesky factorization.
  3. Explain why the supplied subset cannot stand in for the full Pantheon+ likelihood.

Residual vector

Definition: The ordered differences between observed supernova magnitudes and model predictions.

Why it matters here: It is required to answer Why is a list of error bars not a likelihood? and to distinguish direct observation from cosmological inference.

Relationships: Read it with Covariance matrix, the model \(chi^2 = r^T C^{-1} r\), and the evidence statement The public Pantheon+ release documents a 1701 by 1701 statistical-plus-systematic covariance; the included 18 by 18 block is aligned to the selected source rows.

Boundary or common confusion: Subsetting covariance preserves selected-row correlations but does not preserve the full survey's parameter constraints or selection function.

Slide 1 · 8 min

Residuals are a vector

Define observed minus model magnitude and establish the order of rows as part of the data contract.

Slide 2 · 10 min

Covariance carries shared modes

Read diagonal and off-diagonal elements; connect common zeropoint shifts to correlated residuals.

Slide 3 · 12 min

Stable generalized least squares

Whiten with a Cholesky factor and solve; do not form C inverse explicitly.

Slide 4 · 12 min

Source-format audit

Check the release's declared 1701 dimension, 8-decimal rounding, symmetry tolerance, and selected row indices.

Slide 5 · 10 min

Fit an intercept only

Remove a common offset at fixed shape and report the conditional result without calling it an Omega_m fit.

Slide 6 · 8 min

Failure modes

Compare diagonal-only and full-block results as a diagnostic exercise; do not promote either subset result to publication inference.

Quantitative anchor

For the 18-row subset, GLS gives beta=-0.11997 +/- 0.04017 mag; this is conditional and not a survey fit.

\[chi^2 = r^T C^{-1} r\]

Interpretation and limits

Shared calibration, photometric, and population uncertainties correlate objects. A diagonal-only fit changes the information content and can bias uncertainty; use factorization and linear solves instead of explicitly inverting a covariance matrix.
